June 2026 Levy Mining Update: Another Swing and a Miss

On June 23, 2026, The Springfield Township Planning Commission received another monthly update on the Levy/BMC mining application for the proposed Ormond Road sand and gravel mine. Unfortunately, this update missed the mark. Again.

According to the June 15 update from Carlisle/Wortman, there have been no meetings between Township officials or consultants and the applicant since the last update. The memo also states that exploratory well drilling may occur in July, but that schedule is subject to change. So, even the one listed activity is a maybe.

The update also notes that Springfield Township received a Freedom of Information Act request from Levy/Burroughs on May 22, 2026, requesting documents and communications related to the application. But here is what the update did not include:

There was no information about when Levy/Burroughs would be resubmitting materials to address the deficiencies (that were identified more than a year ago) in its application. There was no fact-finding committee update. There was no information about the exploratory well that has already been drilled. There was no update on the aquifer drawdown test. There was no update on the effort to reclassify Ormond Road. There was no new technical review, no consultant findings, and no clear timeline for when the application may return to the Planning Commission for meaningful review.

And perhaps most disappointing: the Planning Commission members did not ask any questions.

The memo itself ended by inviting questions and asking how the monthly update could be improved. That was an opening. A very clear one. But instead of asking about the missing information, the application deficiencies, the well drilling, Ormond Road, the fact-finding process, or the next steps, the update passed without meaningful discussion.

Monthly updates are supposed to help the public and the planning commission members understand what is happening. But this latest update mostly confirms what residents already know: there are still major unanswered questions, and very little substantive information is being provided publicly.

Those unanswered questions include groundwater impacts, private well concerns, wetland impacts, haul route safety, Ormond Road upgrades, application deficiencies, and whether the proposed mining operation can meet the Township’s standards for Special Land Use approval.

At this point, the public does not need another “nothing to report” wrapped up as an update. Residents need clear answers, current documentation, and a transparent explanation of what the Township has received, what it is still waiting for, and what happens next.

For now, the Levy application still appears to be paused.

And the public is still waiting.
