Springfield Township Sand & Gravel Mines
Sand and gravel mining (also known as aggregate mining) in Springfield Township is tied to Michigan’s extensive glacial history. As glaciers moved across Michigan, they left behind large deposits of sand, gravel, and stone. These natural resources are heavily exploited for roads, concrete, asphalt, and construction.
Springfield Township’s mining history is not limited to one proposed project. It includes an active sand & gravel mining operation, an abandoned mine, and the current Ormond Road application now under Township review. All three sites are owned by Edw. C. Levy Co., though some records list the owner or operator under a Levy subsidiary, Burroughs Materials Corporation (BMC).
