Township Adds New ‘Carlisle Wortman Updates’ Page for Gravel Mine Application Section

After months of limited public communication about the proposed Levy/Burroughs Materials gravel mine on Ormond Road, there is finally a new update area on the Springfield Township website.

A new Carlisle Wortman update page has been added under the Gravel Mine Application section of the Township website. As of now, the page includes three documents: two update documents related to Planning Commission meetings and one set of meeting minutes titled Levy Kickoff Meeting.

A Note About the “Meetings” Section

The new Carlisle Wortman page appears to divide the documents into two categories: “Updates” and “Meetings.” At this time, the “Meetings” section does not appear to include public Planning Commission meetings or Township Board meetings. Instead, the only document currently posted there is titled ‘Levy Kickoff Meeting’ and appears to relate to an internal or working meeting connected to the review of the mining application.

Although the page does not label this as a “Fact-Finding Committee” meeting, several people associated with the earlier fact-finding process are listed as present, including Planning Commission Chair Brian Galley, Trustee Kevin Sclesky, and residents Chris Todd and Amanda Gruzin. The meeting also included Township officials, legal counsel, Levy representatives, Zausmer attorneys (Levy’s Legal Counsel), SmithGroup, and Ramboll consultants.

Oko Observations

What I am noticing is that this is now another place to check for updates and meeting-related documents, which may be helpful but also adds one more stop in an already scattered process. It also raises another question: if future fact-finding meetings include Carlisle Wortman, will those records appear under the Fact-Finding Committee materials, under the Carlisle Wortman page, or both? Until the Township clearly explains how these documents will be organized, residents may need to check multiple locations to follow the same review process.

While it is good to see some movement toward building communication, this also creates yet another place residents have to know to check. Following the Ormond Road gravel mine proposal can feel less like public communication and more like navigating a maze of information with documents scattered across meeting packets, township pages, document sections, updates, and now a separate Carlisle Wortman page.

Success in this process can be measured in several ways, including whether communication with residents continues to improve. Right now, the Township website and public meetings appear to be the only ways information is being shared, so clarity and usability are especially important. Updates should be easy to find, with minimal clicking and searching, so residents can follow the process efficiently.

Oko Environmental will continue tracking these updates, pulling the pieces together, and sharing weekly emails to help residents follow new information as it becomes available.
