Mining Ordinance Update: Public Comment Remains Closed as of Oct. 8, 2026
During the October 8, 2026, Springfield Township Board of Trustees meeting, Township Clerk Sean Miller addressed emails from residents requesting that the public comment form for the proposed mining ordinance be reopened.
Miller acknowledged the requests but explained that the Township would not be reopening the form at this time because changes have been made to the proposed ordinance, making the previously circulated draft “obsolete.”
He stated that once the revisions are completed, the proposed mining ordinance will return to the Board for its first reading.
Oko Environmental has already reached out to Clerk Miller with several questions seeking clarification on what residents can expect moving forward.
Those questions include whether there is a deadline for completing the revised draft, how residents will be notified when it becomes available, and how much time the public will have to review it before the first reading.
Oko also asked what the next public comment process might look like, including whether both online and in-person submission options could be offered to make participation more accessible. Another important question is how the Township will communicate whether residents’ feedback has been considered and incorporated into the revised ordinance.
These are important details, particularly considering the limited time residents were previously given to review and comment on the proposed changes.
Oko Environmental appreciates Clerk Miller acknowledging residents’ requests during tonight’s meeting and looks forward to receiving clarification on the next steps.
NOTE: Clerk Miller was the only board member to address the issue.
Oko will share additional information as it becomes available.
