Springfield Township: Data Centers

Springfield Township Data Center Ordinance Review: Where Things Stand

Springfield Township is currently reviewing proposed changes to its Zoning Ordinance that would establish new rules for data centers and other large-scale industrial developments. The proposed language addresses where these facilities could be located, setbacks, water use, noise, energy demand, emergency response, environmental impacts, decommissioning, public reporting, and other issues.

These changes are still in draft form and have not been adopted.

CURRENT STATUS — DRAFT UNDER REVIEW
Last Updated: August 24, 2026
Carlisle/Wortman issued a revised draft dated August 18, 2026 following Planning Commission discussion and input. The Planning Commission is still reviewing the language before moving to the formal public-hearing stage.

This timeline tracks Springfield Township’s public discussions, meetings, moratorium, and ordinance review related to possible data center development.

How did we get here?

On December 11, 2025, the Springfield Township Board adopted a temporary moratorium on data center approvals.

The Township stated that its existing Zoning Ordinance had limited provisions addressing data centers and lacked specific standards for the newer, much larger facilities now being developed around Michigan and the country.

The moratorium directed the Planning Commission, Township planners, engineers, officials, and attorneys to study the issue and develop proposed zoning changes.

Important: The moratorium and the proposed ordinance amendments are two different things. The moratorium temporarily addressed applications while the Township worked on regulations. The ordinance amendments would establish the rules that could govern future projects.
